Hasn't everything been genetically modified just by trial and error? Cross pollination is everywhere, inner breading of strains of this or that?

Chummers - genetically modified foods are different from cross pollination and inbreeding, etc. The DNA of the plant is being altered in a laboratory by injecting foreign genes directly into the cell itself. And, once the DNA of a plant is altered, you can never go back to it's original state. And cross contamination of non-GM crops is happening more often, a real risk and something that cannot be undone. This site has some good articles responsibletechnology.org/GMFree/Home/index.cfm [responsibletechnology.org/GMFree/Home/index.cfm]

My first (as in the first that i think should be addressed, not the most important one) is that everything with OGM in it should have a clear label (i'm not saying warning as it would automatically imply a danger) that says it, so, at least one could choose.
Then we have could proceed discussing if they are healthy and everything else about them.

Anything GMO should be tagged as such. Many would be surprised if they knew that 85% of breakfast cereals contain GMO corn. Also a regulatory commission should be created. The only ones to watch over GMO crops is the companies that produce them.

I still say that the cross pollination and inbreeding is very similar to the topic of genetically modified plants. The process has just been sped up through the dna manipulation.

It does not concern me in so much as the human body is adaptive to sources of nutrients.

5: "Many would be surprised if they knew that 85% of breakfast cereals contain GMO corn. " Perhaps this is what I was responding to, that so much of what we grow has already been touched by genetically altered dna.

Chummers - I'd still say to do the research. There have been some studies that have shown organ damage from GM food. I know that there is a lot of controversy regarding studies on both sides. But, for me, it is not worth the risk. And the dangers of permanently altering plants that can never be undone...

Putting (only for a moment) the health consideration aside... suppose that they are safe... we must realize that "permanently altering plants that can never be undone" as 123Maroon said isn't the problem. Using slower, much slower, methods we (as in humans) have done it since agriculture was born.
So, and i repeat myself if there is/will be a health and ecologically risk free OGM it should be done.
That said being sure that there are no risks will need a lot of (not founded by the OGM industries ;-) ) studies and a lot of time... and we can even ending demonstrating that there are real (the keyword word being demonstrated unaddressable issues.

The answer is simple. Support your local grower that is raising things how you would like them to be raised. Do not expect a business that is trying to make a profit through faster and cheaper growing cycles to consider a little thing like permanently altered dna patterns to matter to them or their stockholders. Look to the local co-op or organic food source and support them through your purchases. A consumer driven economy responds quickly to customer buying trends.
